Columbian coffee has been highly marketed in the U.S, for decades, and has come to equate itself with “good” coffee. However, the vast majority of coffee produced in the country is purchased by large corporate buyers, who can be a bit less discriminating than we’d prefer. When buying in volume, purchasers source from very large plantations that produce a million pounds and more, which is often produced using factory farming methods. That’s the ugly side of Columbian coffee, and of course, a generalization.
There are a number of high elevation regions in Columbia that produce very high quality coffee, but in smaller amounts. The coffee is grown on smaller farms or estates, often family owned and operated, where attention to quality is more pronounced. The Huila region is a source of some of the most sought-after specially coffee in Columbia.
This offering comes from the farm of Hector Arcadio Zuñiga, who has been producing coffee for over 25 years. He purchased the farm 12 years ago, and it has grown from 4 to over 15 hectares (about 37 acres). His attention to quality and production efficiency has ensured his profitability, and his cupping lab ensures that the coffees meet his quality standard. He and his 2 sons pour their hearts into every bean, and are dedicated “…to offer you the best cup. Just taste it.”
We love the sweetness of this coffee, tempered by some bright citrus. It’s a smooth cup with a recognizable familiarity, one you will enjoy day after day.
