More Deconstruction

I spent a fun afternoon yesterday taking things apart, and thinking a lot about how things would go back together. The sad part is, the deeper I get into this trailer, the more things I uncover that really need redone. “Functional” just isn’t good enough for us. I’m sure there’s a bit of unwarranted pride involved too.

I removed the janky outside shelf, and the stained “pallet” wood accents. Much better as a starting point. We’ll have a nicer shelf, mounted higher.

I also plan to remove those awning supports, but need to measure the weight of the awning itself. Ordered a hook scale today. Should be an easy to replace them with gas struts, and the awning itself is pretty light.

Note the absence of vinyl signage. They came off mostly cleanly, even the vinyl that was underneath the top layer. You can see 3 layers of paint; red, then light blue (the first coffee trailer owner), then darker blue (the most recent owner). We’re not gonna add another layer, I don’t think. Depends on the price of a wrap. 🙂

In the process of deconstructing/cleaning, I filled that garbage can. I started by just taking stuff off the interior walls, and it kinda grew. Remember the A/C unit? I wanted to remove the ugly 2×4 framing on the outside. Well, the 2x4s were attached with screws from the inside. Fine, I took off the inside door moulding, and see that I need to remove the wall board (lauan, really) to get to them. And no insulation anywhere that I could see. I think that front wall’s in for a new skin.

Here’s how it looks after I decided that running electrical conduit right across the wall was ugly. After we replace the counters, I’ll run everything from below, and pop up through the counter to outlets.

They’d laid some new very thin vinyl on the front counter, and it was peeling off. I removed it, and found a laminate board with glued formica-type stuff (the white). It too peeled in places, revealing water damage. Guess that whole counter’s coming out.

Fortunately, the cabinet frame seems to be solid. I’ll make a template of that top first, so I can trace it on a new piece of 3/4″ ply. The left counter is just your standard pressboard kitchen counter with backsplash. It’s coming out too.

So the easy stuff is done. Counters – which we knew we were going to replace – are likely next, maybe in parallel with the side walls, which are all lauan-thickness junk. We hope to insulate the whole thing, since we’d like to extend our season from late winter to early winter here in northeast Ohio. Maybe the cabinets themselves need to come out. Oy, it makes me think we might have been better off starting from scratch with a new trailer. 20/20 vision, I suppose. Well, we have this one now, so we’re gonna move forward.

Still thinking about equipment – all the time! – and currently evaluating the possibility of switching from a generator to battery power. Lots of things to consider. Gonna put together a spreadsheet of electrical items today to calculate power requirements. Is this something like what building your own house is like?
